Hands-on Diabetes Program

Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center

This free, 8-week program offered at the Garcia Center by the Coastal Bend Food Bank offers hands-on learning, a meal or snack served in class, exercise, and tips for healthy eating on a budget. This two-hour class meets one day a week and provides education on preventing or managing diabetes, discovering signs and symptoms, and exercise and meal plans. 

Instructors from the Food Bank are: Georgiana Bradshaw, RN CDE, Diabetes Education Coordinator; and Kate Hilliard, MS RD LD, Nutrition Education Manager. Please register by calling 361-887-7979.

Classes meet at the Garcia Arts & Education Center, 2021 Agnes St.
Evening session meets Tuesdays 5:30–7:30 pm.
Daytime session meets Wednesdays 9:30–11:30 am.

  • Registration: JAN 8 (4:30-7:30PM) & JAN 9 (9:30-11:30AM)
  • Week 1 – JAN 15/16 – Diabetes overview & intro to nutrition
  • Week 2 – JAN 22/23 – In-depth nutrition & carb counting
  • Week 3 – JAN 29/30 – Highs, lows, sick days, & glucose monitoring
  • Week 4 – JAN 5/6 – Get moving with exercise
  • Week 5 – FEB 12/13 – Understanding oral medications & insulin
  • Week 6 – FEB 19/20 – How to prevent complications
  • Week 7 – FEB 26/27 – Coping, stress management, & travel
  • Week 8 – MARCH 5/6 – Review, goal setting, & graduation
